Utah Adults Approaching Herd Immunity

Updated: May 8

More than 6 in 10 Vaccinated, Vaccine Willingness at 75%

PHOENIX (August 23rd, 2021)- In the wake of the surge of COVID’s Delta variant across the nation, adult residents of the Beehive State are nearing the coveted herd immunity milestone of 70% vaccinated. According to the most recent Utah Public Opinion Pulse (UTPOP) survey conducted by OH Predictive Insights, 63% of Utahns are vaccinated, and another 12% say they are willing to take the vaccine.

The UTPOP is a statewide survey of Utah residents providing regular updates on the moods, perceptions, and opinions of Utahns on hot topics facing the state. This UTPOP was conducted August 2nd – August 8th, 2021 and surveyed 844 general population Utahns (18+ YO) giving the survey a margin of error of +/- 3.37%.

Even though their vaccination rates are high (in fact, higher than Nevada’s and Arizona’s according to our most recent polling in those states), Utah residents are more pessimistic than optimistic about the near future of the Coronavirus issue in the state. Almost half (49%) of respondents expect the spread of COVID to get worse in the next 30 days while only 23% say it will get better. Another 28% expect conditions to remain the same.

“With 75% vaccine willingness, Utahns are taking precaution against the threat of COVID in their state,” said Mike Noble, OHPI Chief of Research, “but with half of residents expecting COVID conditions to worsen in the next month, it appears the surge of the Delta variant is driving that concern.”

Residents who are currently the most concerned about the recent spread of COVID in Utah tend to consume more news media than those less concerned. Of the 43% of Utahns who are extremely or moderately concerned, 82% say they tune in to Local TV for news and nearly 7 in 10 get their news from Radio (69%), ABC (69%), CBS (68%), and NBC (68%). Switching lenses to the 34% of respondents who are slightly or not at all concerned, 70% use Local TV, 6 in 10 tune in to Radio (60%) and FOX (58%), and half get their news from ABC (50%) and CBS (50%).

“A key takeaway from this data: news media has a clear influence on levels of concern,” said Noble. “It will be interesting to watch the movement of current and future COVID sentiment in Utah as OHPI continues to track the public opinion of Beehive State residents.”
