The Push for Kush

The Push for Kush

While moderates are more willing, vast majority remain opposed

PHOENIX (June 15, 2018) – A new poll  from OH Predictive Insights of likely 2018 Arizona Republican primary voters were asked if they supported the legalization of recreational marijuana. Almost three quarters of respondents were opposed to marijuana, while 21% were in favor according to our latest poll.

This comes in the wake of the 2016 failed ballot measure that was defeated narrowly with only 51.3%, or 67,000 votes. OH Predictive Insights polled this as a close loss in October before the election and found that Arizona Republicans backed the measure at only 30-64 support. Those were presidential year general election voters, and not a more conservative, older electorate of midterm election voters so the comparison should not be equal, but it does show that the opposition is still strong.

“Despite Arizona sharing a border with two legalization states, California and Nevada, legalization of recreational marijuana won’t happen until demographics change” explained Mike Noble, chief pollster and managing partner at OH Predictive Insights, a Phoenix-based research company.

While Republicans are opposed to recreational marijuana across the board, there is higher relative support among more moderate voters. Christian Conservatives, however, make up a larger bloc of voters and are opposed at much higher rates. We asked respondents to tell us which ideology that the respondent felt best reflected them and then looked at those in favor legalization broken down by faction below. The total height of the bars shows how large each slice of the Republican party that group represents.

“If the Trump backers don’t get on board, the large core base of Christian Conservatives will ensure that the Republican party will not be supporting legalization anytime soon,” said Noah Rudnick, data analyst with OH Predictive Insights.

Methodology: This IVR telephone survey was completed by OH Predictive Insights on June 11th thru 12th, 2018, from a likely Arizona 2018 Republican Primary voter sample. The sample demographics accurately reflected party affiliation, geographic location, gender, and age. 90% of respondents were Republican and 10% were Independent voters. 100% of respondents were completed via landline. The sample size was 600 completed surveys, with a MoE of ±4%.
