Arizonans Split on Governor Doug Ducey’s Decision to Pull the

Welcome Mat from Nike

Fault lines found on party identification, education, and region

PHOENIX (July 3rd, 2019) – 49% of 2020 Likely Voting Arizonans said that they support Governor Doug Ducey’s decision to withdraw $1 million in state incentives for Nike to build a factory in Arizona, according to a poll conducted by OH Predictive Insights (OHPI).

“What we saw are some very familiar fault lines in what Arizonans thought about this issue,” said Mike Noble, chief of research at OHPI, “74% of Republicans were in support of the Governor’s decision and 67% of Democrats were opposed. We also found among those that reported to us as having less than a college education were more likely to support the decision while those with a college education were opposed, although these lines were much narrower.”

OHPI also asked poll respondents how proud they are to be an American. A large majority of Independent voters (89%) said they were either extremely proud or moderately proud to be an American.  95% of Republicans and 81% of Democrats also answered this way. 94% of Rural Arizonans said they were extremely or moderately proud to be an American. 92% of those with less than a college education were proud to be an American, 84% of college-educated responded the same way.
