POLL: Majority of Arizonans Believe Climate Change is Occurring

A majority believe Climate Change is a result of human activity

PHOENIX (Sept 5th, 2019) – More than 70 percent of Arizona voters believe climate change is occurring, according to the latest OHPI Arizona Public Opinion Poll (AZPOP).

The latest poll results indicate that 72% of respondents believe that climate change is happening, with support crossing all demographics. Among party affiliation, 90% percent of Democrats and 75% of Independents are on board with the climate change debate. Republicans are also embracing the idea, with 55% believing climate change is real.

“The days of being able to simply dismiss climate change as an issue and that human activity isn’t the core perceived cause of it is just not a reality among the likely voting Arizona electorate,” said Mike Noble, chief of research at OH Predictive Insights.

The poll shows that Arizonans are not only believing in climate change but also believe that human activity (62%) is the major cause of it. Just a quarter of the respondents believe that climate change has nothing to do with human activity.

Almost all demographic groups strongly believe climate change is caused by human activity except when it comes to party affiliation.  Democrats (85%) and Independents (73%) overwhelmingly believe that climate change is caused by human activity although just one-third of Republicans (34%) believe human activity is the cause. Interestingly enough, the only demographic group that is underwater between human activity (34%) and not human activity (46%) were Republicans by 12-points.

Methodology: This blended poll was conducted via live caller and IVR. The survey was completed by OH Predictive Insights on August 13, 2019, and August 14, 2019, from an Arizona likely 2020 General Election voter sample. The sample demographics accurately reflected party affiliation, gender, region, and age. The sample size was 600 completed surveys, with an MoE of ± 4%. Numbers may not total 100%, due to rounding.
